Engine deep-dive
How Claude handles company recommendations
Claude's reputation for naming no one describes Claude answering from memory. With web search on, as in every scan we run, it reads and cites live pages, and that changes how you earn a place.
Claude has two modes, and which one you get is the caller's choice
Ask Claude "best MSP in Ontario" with nothing else switched on and it answers from training weights. It has not checked your website, read your Clutch reviews or seen your latest post. Almost every article about Claude and AEO describes this mode, usually as though it were the whole engine.
It is not. Anthropic ships a web search tool on the API, and with it on Claude behaves like a retrieval engine.
- To test it, we forced it on our own probe on 2026-08-21. The same class of question came back built on live pages, with the source URLs attached.
- One answer we measured cited a Clutch directory listing and three round-up articles. Every firm it named came out of those four pages.
- None of that is reachable from training weights.
So the practical question is never "does Claude browse". It is which mode sits in front of your buyer.
- A developer in Cursor, an enterprise deployment wired to MCP servers, an internal tool built on the API with search enabled: all of those can read your site today.
- A plain training-weights call cannot.
- Every scan TofuBofu runs uses the search mode, so the number we report is the one you can move with pages.
- Your content still has to earn both modes. That is the rest of this page.
What Claude reads
Anthropic publishes little about Claude's training mix, so the training half of this list is our read. The search half is visible in the answers themselves:
Wikipedia and Wikidata
Companies with Wikipedia entries are recommended far more often. Claude treats Wikipedia as a high-trust source for entity verification. If your company does not have a Wikipedia page, Claude may not recognize it as a distinct entity.
Directories and round-ups
When Claude searches a buying query, the pages that come back are mostly lists: directory listings, best-of round-ups, comparison posts. The probe answer above drew every firm it named from one Clutch listing and three round-ups. Whoever is on those lists is in the answer.
Industry publications
Content from recognized industry publications (CRN, Channel Futures, TechTarget for IT) appears in Claude's training data. Being featured or mentioned in these publications increases citation probability.
Structured website content
Well-structured pages with clear headings, FAQ sections and specific service descriptions are likelier to enter training data and be parsed correctly. Claude handles structured content better than marketing-heavy copy.
Claude's conservative recommendation style
Claude tends to be more cautious than ChatGPT about naming specific companies. Where ChatGPT lists "Top 5 MSPs in Ontario," Claude often responds with "Here are some factors to consider when choosing an MSP" without naming anyone.
This is by design. Claude is built to avoid stating what it cannot support, and recommending a company it cannot verify is exactly that risk. With search on, the caution changes shape: it names firms its sources name.
For you, a Claude recommendation is a stronger signal. The bar is higher, so fewer competitors clear it. The white space in Claude is even larger than in ChatGPT.
Actions that move Claude visibility
- Build your Wikipedia presence. If you do not have a Wikipedia page, create a Wikidata entry at minimum. Include company type, founding year, headquarters, key services.
- Get onto the round-ups. Find the best-of lists and directory categories that come back for your buying queries, and earn a place on them: a listing, a review, a contribution the editor can use.
- Get covered in industry publications. A mention in CRN or Channel Futures is worth more than 10 blog posts on your own site for Claude visibility.
- Structure your website content. It pays on both timelines. A clean page is what search-enabled Claude fetches and cites today. It also stands the better chance of landing in training data, attributed to you, later.
How Claude retrieves and cites, from Anthropic's own documents
- From the vendor Every search result comes back with its citation. Anthropic documents that citations are always enabled for web search, each carrying the URL and title of the page used. A page Claude reads is a page it can name. Anthropic: web search tool
- From the vendor Three crawlers, three jobs. ClaudeBot gathers training data, Claude-User fetches a page when a person asks Claude to, and Claude-SearchBot indexes pages for search. Anthropic says disabling Claude-SearchBot may reduce your visibility in its search results, so check your robots.txt allows it. Anthropic: its crawlers
- From the vendor Whoever deploys Claude can fence the web. The API lets a builder restrict search to an allow-list of domains or block domains outright. An internal tool built on Claude may only ever read the sites its builder trusts. One more reason the big directories matter. Anthropic: domain filtering
- Our read It hedges, but now it hedges with sources. Claude stays the most careful engine about naming a firm. With search on, that care shows up as answers assembled from a few third-party lists, so whoever owns those lists owns the answer.
What moves your Tofu Index and your Bofu Index on Claude
Your AI Visibility Index is two numbers with two jobs.
- The Tofu Index asks whether Claude puts you in the consideration set: the share of buying queries where it names you.
- The Bofu Index asks whether it picks you: the share of head-to-head comparisons, you against a named rival, where it chooses you.
- A free scan reports your Tofu Index on every engine we query. Fix and Dominate add the Bofu Index.
| Lever | Tofu Index: are you considered | Bofu Index: are you picked |
|---|---|---|
| Allow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User | Lets search index and fetch your pages. Blocked, you are reachable only through training data, months behind. | Indirect: a page Claude cannot read cannot argue for you. |
| Places on the round-ups and directories for your category | The biggest lever on Claude: these are the pages its searches return for a buying query. | Moderate. A list names you; it rarely argues for you. |
| A balanced comparison page per named rival | Small. | Claude quotes a comparison that states the trade-off plainly. The page that is honest about where the rival wins is the one trusted on where you do. |
| Wikipedia, Wikidata and one consistent name | Helps a cautious engine recognise you as a real entity rather than a name it cannot place. | Lets it state facts about you with confidence when asked to choose. |
| Earned coverage in trade press | Current, independent and searchable: what search returns. | Coverage that names your strength becomes the reason Claude gives. |
What our own scans measured
Claude named the brand in 1.2% of the buying queries we put to it across 46 completed scans, measured on firms that had each run a scan while suspecting they were missing, which is not a random sample of B2B websites.
Read that as a measurement of the first mode, not of the engine.
- Every one of those scans used a probe that answered from training weights, because the API does that unless you force it otherwise.
- We began forcing web search on 2026-08-28.
- We have deliberately not moved the number: too few scans sit on the other side of that change to state a new one honestly.
- Inventing one would be worse than publishing an old one with its date on it. Expect it to move when we can.
ChatGPT managed 1.7% and Gemini 0.4% on the same suspect-selected reports. Treat both with care, not as evidence about the engines:
- Gemini's is a floor, depressed by faults of our own.
- ChatGPT's was measured before we forced that engine to search the web on 2026-08-18, so it describes a retired probe.
So the interesting difference is not how often Claude names somebody. It is what happens when it does.
In July we asked four engines to recommend managed IT providers across 15 North American regions, then resolved every name to a live website.
- 2 of the 129 names Claude produced in that managed IT fieldwork could be corroborated, against 101 of the 257 from Perplexity.
- Six firms recommended in the study have no trace of existing anywhere we could check. All six were Claude's.
None of that makes Claude a bad engine to be named by. You earn Claude through corroboration rather than publishing volume, for two reasons:
- The mode most buyers meet still answers from what it absorbed.
- The mode that does read the live web reaches for directories and third-party round-ups before it reaches for you.
Read the MSP AI Visibility Report 2026, which shows the method and the names we could not verify.
How we count, because the denominator does the work
These rates cover buying queries only: what a buyer types when choosing a vendor, before they know who you are.
- We deliberately leave out queries that contain the company's own name.
- Across the same 46 reports, every engine answers a name-in-the-question probe with that company 82% to 100% of the time.
- Folding those in lifts the headline to about 10% for the field and 19% for the leader.
- We published that flattering version on this page until 2026-08-12, and have corrected it.
The buyer who already knows your name is not the buyer you are missing. A number that counts them measures your own marketing back at you.
What you get, and what it costs
Claude is one of the 5 engines every plan queries, including the free Track plan. Engines are not plan-gated. What a plan changes is how many queries you get per scan, how often the scan runs, whether the scan adds the head-to-head comparisons behind the Bofu Index, and whether we draft the pages that close the gaps it finds.
| Plan | Price | Queries per engine | Scans | Drafts a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Track | Free | 5 | 1 a month | Ideas only |
| Fix | $99/mo | 10 | 4 a month | 10 |
| Dominate | $499/mo | 25 | 4 a month | 25 |

Does Claude browse the web?
Only when whoever calls it turns web search on, and then it genuinely does. Anthropic ships a web search tool on the API; with it on, Claude fetches live pages and returns the source URLs it read. Left off, it answers from training weights alone. So the answer depends on the app or API call in front of you, a distinction most AEO advice about Claude still misses.
Why does Claude often refuse to name a specific company?
Claude is deliberately cautious. When it is not confident a recommendation is current and well grounded, it hedges and tells you to verify rather than guessing. You get named through evidence: enough consistent, third-party-corroborated signal in your real category that naming you is the low-risk answer. Vague or self-serving claims get filtered out.
How does Claude differ from ChatGPT for recommendations?
Claude is more conservative. It qualifies more, names fewer companies and is harder to nudge, which also means fewer false recommendations. ChatGPT with browsing more readily pulls and names live sources. So one firm can be named by ChatGPT and skipped by Claude, and the Claude fix leans harder on trustworthy third-party corroboration.
How do I get my company into Claude's training data?
You do not submit to it. Claude learns from a broad crawl of the public web up to its training cutoff, weighted toward sources it treats as trustworthy: Wikipedia, established industry publications, structured documentation and high-signal community discussion like Reddit. Being named there consistently, in your real category, puts you in the data.
Does publishing new content help on Claude?
On both timelines, at different speeds. Where web search is on, a page you publish today can be fetched and cited today: the fast path. Where it is off, new pages reach the model only at its next training cycle: the slow one. Publish for both; the same well-structured page wins either way.
How often does Claude's knowledge update?
On model release cycles, not continuously. Each new Claude model ships with a more recent knowledge cutoff: content indexed before it can be reflected, and anything after waits for the next model. That is why Claude moves slower than Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, which re-read the live web on every query.
Is Claude worth optimizing for if it has fewer users than ChatGPT?
For B2B, yes, disproportionately. Claude skews toward technical, engineering and enterprise users, the people who evaluate and buy B2B tools and services, and it is embedded in developer environments like Cursor. Fewer total users, a higher concentration of decision-makers. If your buyers are technical, absence from Claude is a real gap.
Does Claude see my website when I use it inside an app like Cursor?
It can, if that app gives it web or file access. The model does not reach for the web on its own, but developers connect it to tools, web search or MCP servers that fetch live content mid-conversation. There your well-structured pages can be read and cited on the spot. It is also why TofuBofu ships an MCP server, so Claude can run a real visibility scan for a domain from inside the chat.
