Engine deep-dive
YouTube for B2B services: the AI search angle
YouTube is owned by Google, and the asset an engine reads is the transcript, not the video. For B2B firms it is the most underused channel in AI search, and it pays first on Google's own engines.
Key findings
- youtube.com led the domains in the Google AI Mode answers we recovered, a small measured sample shown in the cross-tab on /engines
- As a Google property, YouTube sits closest to Gemini and Google AI Mode
- AI engines parse video transcripts, not just titles and descriptions
- Production quality does not correlate with AI citation. Content specificity does.
How YouTube content reaches AI engines
What B2B service companies should publish
You do not need a production studio. You need specific content with accurate titles and descriptions. AI engines parse metadata and transcripts, not production value. A 7-minute webcam video with a specific, query-matching title will outperform a cinematic brand video for AI search.
1. Service explainer videos
One 5 to 10 minute video per service: 'What Does Managed IT Support Include?' or 'How a SOC 2 Assessment Works.' Walk through the process, deliverables and typical outcomes. Title it with the exact question a buyer would ask ChatGPT.
2. Case study walkthroughs
Tell a client engagement with specifics: the problem, your approach, the timeline and measurable results. 'How We Helped a 200-Person Law Firm Migrate to Microsoft 365 in 3 Weeks.' These get cited because they contain specific, verifiable outcomes.
3. Compliance and how-to guides
'How to Prepare for a SOC 2 Audit: A Step-by-Step Guide.' These target the highest-intent queries in B2B services. Buyers searching for compliance guidance are ready to hire someone. Your video becomes the answer AI engines cite.
4. Industry-specific content
'IT Support for Dental Practices: What You Need to Know.' Vertical-specific videos target the same white space queries as vertical-specific web pages. The video feeds Gemini and Google AI Mode; the companion blog post feeds ChatGPT and Claude.
5. Thought leadership interviews
Interview a client (with permission) about working with you, or a team member about a technical topic. Conversational content creates natural, detailed transcripts that AI engines can parse and cite.
YouTube optimization for AI search
- Title: Use the exact query a buyer would type. "Best MSP for HIPAA Compliance" not "Our Healthcare IT Solutions"
- Description: Write 200+ words. Include your company name, services, location, and a summary of the video content. AI engines parse descriptions for context.
- Captions: Upload corrected captions. Auto-generated captions misspell technical terms, company names, and compliance frameworks. Accurate transcripts mean accurate AI citations.
- VideoObject schema: Add VideoObject structured data to any page where you embed the video on your website. This tells AI engines the video exists and what it covers.
- Companion blog post: For every YouTube video, publish a companion blog post on your site with the same content, FAQ schema and a video embed. That covers both Google engines (Gemini, AI Mode) and the rest (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity).
How a video reaches an AI answer
- From the vendor You control the transcript. YouTube lets you upload your own captions and edit the automatic ones. Automatic captions misspell product names and frameworks, and a misspelled name is a mention no engine can match to you. YouTube Help: add subtitles and captions
- Our read Google's engines sit closest. Gemini is grounded on Google Search and AI Mode builds from Google's index, and YouTube is Google's own property. That proximity is structural; no other engine has it.
- Our read Other engines read the page, not the player. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity reach a video through text that ranks: the watch page, its description, or a companion post on your site. That post is where the non-Google value lives.
- Our read Engines read; they do not watch. Production value does not reach an answer. A clear title phrased as the buyer's query and a corrected transcript do.
What moves your Tofu Index and your Bofu Index on YouTube
Your AI Visibility Index is two numbers with two jobs.
- The Tofu Index asks whether YouTube puts you in the consideration set: the share of buying queries where it names you.
- The Bofu Index asks whether it picks you: the share of head-to-head comparisons, you against a named rival, where it chooses you.
- A free scan reports your Tofu Index on every engine we query. Fix and Dominate add the Bofu Index.
| Lever | Tofu Index: are you considered | Bofu Index: are you picked |
|---|---|---|
| A video per buying query, titled as the query | Puts an indexed answer on a Google property for that exact query. | Small on its own. |
| Corrected captions | Your name, services and frameworks spelled right, so the mention counts. | Same. |
| Comparison walkthroughs: you vs a named alternative | Small. | A spoken trade-off is quotable evidence for the pick, on the engines nearest to Google. |
| A companion post with the transcript | Carries the video's answer to ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. | Lets every engine quote the comparison, not just Google's. |
What our own scans measured
Engine agreement is thinner than any single check suggests, and video is one of the surfaces that closes the gap.
- In our 15-region managed IT study, no region produced a single firm that all four engines named.
- The ceiling was three engines, and only four of the fifteen regions reached even that.
Being named by one engine is not being on the shortlist. Across 46 completed scans, the best engine named the brand in 7.4% of buying queries and the rest 0.4% to 4.0%, at firms that each scanned while suspecting they were missing. That is not a random sample of B2B websites.
YouTube is the surface all of those engines can read:
- A transcript is text.
- It sits on a domain they already trust.
- The Google engines draw on it directly.
So one answer, recorded once, can be retrieved by engines that never agree on anything else.
Read the MSP AI Visibility Report 2026, which shows the method and the names we could not verify.
How we count, because the denominator does the work
These rates cover buying queries only: what a buyer types when choosing a vendor, before they know who you are.
- We deliberately leave out queries that contain the company's own name.
- Across the same 46 reports, every engine answers a name-in-the-question probe with that company 82% to 100% of the time.
- Folding those in lifts the headline to about 10% for the field and 19% for the leader.
- We published that flattering version on this page until 2026-08-12, and have corrected it.
The buyer who already knows your name is not the buyer you are missing. A number that counts them measures your own marketing back at you.
What you get, and what it costs
YouTube is a source the engines read, not an engine we query. Every plan queries all 5 engines, including the free Track plan, and the Sources pane shows it whenever YouTube is among the domains they cite most. Engines are not plan-gated. What a plan changes is how many queries you get per scan, how often the scan runs, whether the scan adds the head-to-head comparisons behind the Bofu Index, and whether we draft the pages that close the gaps it finds.
| Plan | Price | Queries per engine | Scans | Drafts a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Track | Free | 5 | 1 a month | Ideas only |
| Fix | $99/mo | 10 | 4 a month | 10 |
| Dominate | $499/mo | 25 | 4 a month | 25 |

Check your AI visibility freeFrequently asked questions
Does YouTube content help with ChatGPT visibility?
Indirectly. ChatGPT does not natively index YouTube videos, but its browsing feature can reach YouTube transcripts. YouTube videos that rank well on Google also feed Google AI Overviews. And YouTube content often gets repurposed into blog posts and web pages that ChatGPT can retrieve directly.
What video length works best for B2B AI visibility?
For AI visibility, 5 to 15 minutes is the sweet spot: long enough for substantive transcript content AI engines can extract, short enough that viewers (and AI engines) can identify the core message. Title and description optimization matters more than video length for AI citation probability.
Do YouTube subscribers matter for AI search?
Subscriber count does not appear to drive AI citation probability. AI engines evaluate content relevance and specificity, not channel popularity metrics. A small channel with a specific, well-titled video about 'HIPAA compliance for dental practices' can outperform a large channel with generic IT content for that query.
Should I add captions to my YouTube videos for AI?
Yes. AI engines parse video transcripts and captions to understand video content. YouTube auto-generates captions, but they contain errors. Uploading corrected captions with accurate terminology (especially technical terms, company names, and compliance framework names) helps AI engines extract accurate information from your videos.
Does AI actually watch my videos?
No, it reads them. AI engines do not watch video, they parse the transcript, captions, title and description. So a clear, accurate transcript that answers a real buying query is what gets cited, and a slick video with a vague transcript is nearly invisible. Optimize the words attached to the video, not the production.
How do I get a video cited by AI?
Give the engines clean text to read. Upload a corrected transcript and captions rather than relying on YouTube's auto-generated ones, write a title and description that state the specific question the video answers, and add VideoObject schema on the page where you embed it. A video that plainly answers a buying query, with accurate captions, can be pulled into an AI answer even from a small channel.
Does YouTube help all engines, or mostly Google and Gemini?
It helps broadly, and disproportionately on Google surfaces. YouTube is one of the most-cited domains in AI answers generally, and because Google owns it, it carries extra weight in Gemini and Google AI Overviews. ChatGPT and Perplexity also pull YouTube transcripts when they answer, so one well-captioned video works across engines, with a bonus on the Google side.
Is YouTube worth it if I am not a video person?
Yes, because the win is the transcript, not your on-camera charisma. A plain, useful walkthrough or a talking-head answer to a common buyer question, with an accurate transcript, does the job: citable text delivered as video, on a platform AI trusts. It does not need polish; it needs to be specific and clearly captioned.
