Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: how Google's AI picks sources
AI Overviews is the AI panel on Google's results page: a feature, not one of our engines. We query Google AI Mode instead, because AI Overviews declines to appear on a large share of commercial vendor queries.
What Google itself says
- Google's AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems and highlight content from the Search index.
- Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics, run to build one answer.
- No special AI file, markup or Markdown is needed to appear in them.
- Both report inside Search Console, including a generative AI performance report.
How Google's AI answers are built
- An AI Overview is a summary at the top of a results page, built from several indexed sources.
- AI Mode is Google's conversational search: a separate tab that answers in full, with its reference links attached, and keeps going with follow-ups.
- Both draw on the same index and ranking systems that power the blue links, so the work that earns one earns the other.
- Both can fan a query out into related searches before answering.
So your SEO work is the floor here, not wasted effort. A page Google cannot rank for the query is unlikely to be cited for it. Ranking alone is not enough either: fan-out rewards the site that also answers the sub-questions a buyer has not typed yet.
The signals that matter
1. Rank for the query
Google states its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. The page that earns the blue link is the page the AI answer can reach. There is no separate AI index to submit to.
2. Answer the sub-questions too
Query fan-out runs several related searches to build one answer. A site that answers 'pricing for X', 'X for healthcare' and 'X vs Y' gives Google three chances to pull you in. A single services page gives it one.
3. Structured data is clarity, not a ticket
Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features. Schema still helps it parse who you are. SE Ranking found about 65 percent of pages cited by Google AI Mode carry structured data: a correlation, not a requirement.
4. Google Business Profile for local queries
For a 'best provider in [city]' query, Google's own business data is in reach. Our read: a complete, current profile matters most for firms that sell locally.
5. Reviews that name outcomes
Our read: reviews that state the service, the timeline and the result are the passages an AI answer can quote when it explains a recommendation.

How Google AI Mode retrieves and cites, from Google's own documents
- From the vendor It runs on Search, not beside it. Google states its generative AI features 'are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems' and highlight content from the Search index. Google: optimizing for AI features
- From the vendor One query becomes several searches. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources. They then show a wider set of supporting links. Google: AI features and your website
- From the vendor No special file gets you in. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in its AI features. Effort spent there is effort not spent on the page that answers. Google: the same guide
- From the vendor You can switch yourself off, so check nobody has. Search Console's generative AI control makes a site's content ineligible as input for Google's AI responses. Worth confirming it is off before anything else. Search Console Help
What moves your Tofu Index and your Bofu Index on Google AI Mode
Your AI Visibility Index is two numbers with two jobs.
- The Tofu Index asks whether Google AI Mode puts you in the consideration set: the share of buying queries where it names you.
- The Bofu Index asks whether it picks you: the share of head-to-head comparisons, you against a named rival, where it chooses you.
- A free scan reports your Tofu Index on every engine we query. Fix and Dominate add the Bofu Index.
| Lever | Tofu Index: are you considered | Bofu Index: are you picked |
|---|---|---|
| Rank for the buying query | AI Mode builds from the index, so the ranking page is the reachable page. | Moderate: in the room, not yet chosen. |
| Pages for the sub-questions | Fan-out searches the subtopics too, so each sub-question page is another chance to be pulled in. | A pricing or fit page answers the question a buyer asks right before choosing. |
| A comparison page per named rival | Small. | AI Mode answers versus queries outright; the page that settles the comparison is the one it links. |
| YouTube walkthroughs with transcripts | youtube.com led the domains in the AI Mode answers we recovered, a small measured sample shown in the cross-tab on /engines. | A walkthrough that compares approaches gives a reason to pick you. |
| Leave the generative AI control off | Switched on, your content is ineligible as input for AI responses. | Same. |
What our own scans measured
A note on what we ask:
- Google renders an AI Overview on a shrinking share of commercial vendor queries.
- So TofuBofu queries Google AI Mode, which answers the buying queries an Overview declines and returns its reference links alongside the answer.
- The optimisation advice on this page holds for both surfaces, because both draw on the same retrieval layer.
Across 46 completed scans, AI Mode named the brand in 4.0% of the buying queries we put to it, on firms that had each run a scan while suspecting they were missing, so it is not a random sample of B2B websites.
An engine that returns nothing is recorded as no signal, not as a brand that went unnamed. That sounds pedantic until you see the alternative. Counting silence as absence would manufacture a bad score out of an engine having a quiet day.
The Google surfaces move together. Of the 137 firms Gemini named in our 15-region managed IT study, 24 could be corroborated. That is second of the four engines we tested, consistent with a surface that reads the live web before it answers.
Read the MSP AI Visibility Report 2026, which shows the method and the names we could not verify.
How we count, because the denominator does the work
These rates cover buying queries only: what a buyer types when choosing a vendor, before they know who you are.
- We deliberately leave out queries that contain the company's own name.
- Across the same 46 reports, every engine answers a name-in-the-question probe with that company 82% to 100% of the time.
- Folding those in lifts the headline to about 10% for the field and 19% for the leader.
- We published that flattering version on this page until 2026-08-12, and have corrected it.
The buyer who already knows your name is not the buyer you are missing. A number that counts them measures your own marketing back at you.
What you get, and what it costs
Google AI Mode is one of the 5 engines every plan queries, including the free Track plan. Engines are not plan-gated. What a plan changes is how many queries you get per scan, how often the scan runs, whether the scan adds the head-to-head comparisons behind the Bofu Index, and whether we draft the pages that close the gaps it finds.
| Plan | Price | Queries per engine | Scans | Drafts a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Track | Free | 5 | 1 a month | Ideas only |
| Fix | $99/mo | 10 | 4 a month | 10 |
| Dominate | $499/mo | 25 | 4 a month | 25 |

Check your AI visibility freeFrequently asked questions
Do Google Ads affect AI Overviews?
No. Google AI Overviews are generated from organic signals, not paid advertising. Ads appear separately from the AI-generated summary, and ad spend does not buy a citation inside it.
Is Google AI Overviews the same as featured snippets?
No. Featured snippets pull a single excerpt from one source, while AI Overviews synthesize several sources into a generated summary, often citing 3-5 websites. The ranking signals overlap but are not identical. A page that earns a featured snippet is likelier to be cited in AI Overviews, but it is not guaranteed.
Can I opt out of Google AI Overviews?
The 'nosnippet' meta tag stops Google using your content in AI Overviews, but it also removes you from featured snippets and regular search result descriptions. For B2B service companies, opting out means losing visibility in the fastest-growing search format. We recommend optimizing for inclusion rather than opting out.
How do I track if my company appears in Google AI Overviews?
Search Console now carries a generative AI performance report, rolled out to every site from 31 August 2026. It shows how often your pages appear in Google's AI features, but in its current form has no clicks, CTR or average position. It cannot tell you which queries named a competitor instead of you. TofuBofu queries Google AI Mode directly with your buyers' queries and records who it names.
How do I get cited in Google AI Overviews?
Answer the specific question directly and early on a well-structured page, as a snippet-worthy page does, because AI Overviews lean on the same signals. Use clear headings that match the query, a concise direct answer up top, supporting detail, and schema where it fits. AI Overviews usually synthesize three to five sources per answer, so aim to be one of the few pages that most cleanly answers the exact question.
Are AI Overviews killing my organic traffic?
For informational and top-of-funnel queries, they are absorbing clicks, because the answer is now on the results page and fewer people click through. That is real, and it is why measuring AI visibility matters: the value shifts from the click to the citation. Being named inside the Overview is the win, even without the click. Track your AI Overview presence, not just organic sessions.
Does schema markup help me appear in AI Overviews?
It helps. Structured data makes your content easier for Google to parse and lift into a summary, and analyses find a majority of AI-Overview-cited pages use structured data (SE Ranking put it around 65 percent). Schema is no magic switch: the content still has to answer the query directly. Between two equally good pages, the structured one is easier to cite.
Why do AI Overviews cite my competitors and not me?
Because their pages answer the specific query more directly, or hold the featured-snippet-style position for it, so Google reaches for them when it builds the summary. It is a readout of which pages best answer the question, not a fixed ranking. Find the queries where a competitor is pulled into the Overview and you are not, then build the page that answers better.
